| On the left is a photo of the multicellular alga Volvox carteri and on the right, its single-celled relative Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Though multicellular, Volvox consists of only two cell types, mortal somatic cells and immortal germ cells. David Kirk's lab investigates the genetic and molecular controls that determine these two cell types. Working with Chlamydmonas, Ursula Goodenough's lab studies the evolution of sex and mating type recognition in Chlamydomonas. |
